Fumonisin B1 is hepatoxic (causing liver damage) and nephrotoxic (causing kidney damage) to animals and is the known cause of diseases such as equine leukoencephalomalacia and porcine pulmonary oedema syndrome. The toxin causes disturbed sphingolipid metabolism and cardiovascular dysfunction in both diseases.
Fumonisins are a group of mycotoxins derived from species of the fungus Fusarium. Fumonisin B1 is a carcinogenic, toxic secondary metabolite that inhibits sphingomyelin biosynthesis in neuronal cells by impairing ceramide synthase. It is the most prevalent member of the fumonisin group and is isolated from Fusarium moniliforme (aka Fusarium verticilliodies). FB1 occurs mainly in corn, wheat and other cereals.
