Floxuridine is a pyramidine analogue that acts as an antineoplastic antimetabolite. Floxuridine inhibits cell division by inhibiting thymidylate formation, which in turn prevents the formation of dTTP. Via this mechanism, floxuridine exerts an anti-cancer effect.
Applications:
In clinical oncology, floxuridine is a preferred drug for the treatment of cancers of the colon which have metastasized to the liver. For this purpose, it is typically administered via the hepatic artery. Administration often occurs in conjunction with folinic acid, which enhances the drug's effects. In research, it is primarily used in studies of liver cancers and their treatments, as well as in ongoing studies on the mechanisms of chemotherapeutic drugs.
