Salinomycin is an ionophore isolated from Streptomyces sp. that demonstrates an affinity for sodium and potassium ions. It is most commonly used in agriculture, where it is administered both as an anticoccidial drug for poultry and as a promoter of growth in ruminant animals. It is, however, known to have toxic effects when administered to some animals, particularly horses.
Beyond its agricultural applications, salinomycin has undergone considerable research in recent years as a novel anticancer drug. Of particular interest is the demonstrated ability of salinomycin to overcome cancers that exhibit multidrug resistance. Salinomycin has also been shown to target cancer stem cells. Research into the mechanism by which salinomycin exerts its anticancer effects is ongoing, but it is currently believed to be a result of the drug's ability to interfere with a group of signaling pathways involved in cancer progression, including Notch and Hedgehog.
