Rifampicin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, suppressing RNA polymerase. Rifampicin is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria but less active against Gram-negative bacteria.
The antibiotic interferes with synthesis of nucleic acids by inhibiting DNA dependent RNA polymerase. It blocks initiation of RNA synthesis and thus it is related to cell death and inhibition of DNA synthesis in viruses.
Rifampicin is used for treatment of tuberculosis but it has been reported that the agent can lead to development of hepatitis because of its hepatotoxicity.
