Mitomycin C is an alkylating agent produced from Streptomyces caespitosus. It has antitumor properties, inhibiting DNA synthesis and nuclear division of cancer cells, especially Ehrlich ascites tumor cells. It also activates both intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of apoptosis.
Mitomycin C specifically targets the guanine nucleoside sequence 5'-CpG-3'. It promotes DNA crosslinking and inhibits separation of complementary DNA strands. Because of this mechanism, it is most active from late G1 phase to S phase of cell cycle.
Mitomycin C is useful as an antibiotic for both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.
