Cefpodoxime (free acid) is a metabolite of Cefpodoxime proxetil and a third generation cephalosporin anti-bacterial that is active against both Gram-positive and negative bacteria. Its effect is to inhibit synthesis of bacterial cell wall. Cephalosporins are a type of β-lactam antibiotic that prevents the formation of peptidoglycan cross-links within bacterial cell walls by targeting penicillin-binding proteins.
It is stable towards the most commonly found plasmid-mediated β-lactamases. The in vitro inhibitory activity of it is little affected by the addition of plasma serum or the type of testing medium used; however, increasing the inocula size more than 106 cfu/mL reduced the potency of the drug against β-lactamase producing strains of Enterobacteriaceae.
It is reported that Cefpodoxime proxetil has a postantibiotic effect of up to 2 hours against Gram-positive species, although it was without effect against Gram-negative species.
Applications:
- Antibiotic for gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
- Antimicrobial susceptibility test
