L-arginine is an amino acid which plays several metabolic roles within the human body. Among its most prominent roles is as a nitric oxide precursor. In this capacity, L-arginine regulates endothelial function. Other compounds for which L-arginine is an important precursor include creatine, urea, proline and glutamate.
Biomedical research into the physiological effects of L-arginine has been extensive and is ongoing. Specifically, this amino acid has been shown to enhance immune response to pathogens, promote the release of growth hormones and improve endothelial function in certain types of cardiovascular disease. L-arginine has also been the subject of anti-aging research as a result of its ability to support cell function, metabolic processes and hormone function.
