Nalidixic acid sodium is the first quinolone-based antibacterial, inhibiting bacterial DNA polymerase and avian myeloblastoma virus reverse transcriptase. It inhibits nucleic acid and protein synthesis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae by suppressing essential bacterial enzymes such as topoisomerases IV and DNA gyrase. It has been reported that, in some specific gram-negative bacteria, Nalidixic Acid shows dose-response patterns of a bactericidal.
In addition, it is used for the treatment of urinary tract infections and is used to study anticancer activity.
